How I Maintain My Healthy & Luxurious Hair!
Finally. Finally. I know. I’ve been promising this post for weeks but better late than never right? So those who have known me since forever can attest to the fact that i’ve always had a lot of hair. Since my college days, i’ve done everything possible from blonde highlights to chopping it into a bob and my hair would be still be strong, healthy and even after a big bob chop, my hair would grow back very fast. The reason? I never slacked when it came to my hair maintenance. When I moved to Ghana, I wasn’t taken care of my hair as I were in New York and some breakage did occur but nothing drastic.
Being that i’m on TV, filming, I had to start protecting my hair which has made my hair grow tremendously but I also have certain products and a bi-weekly routine that I use. So here’s my hair secret.
I only perm my hair TWICE a year with Mizani perming cream. Once in the beginning of the year and the second during the summer. WHY? To be quite honest. it’s a method I started two years ago. I figured less chemicals, less damage. Prior to two years ago, I wouldn’t go more than 5 weeks without a fresh relaxer. Can you imagine?
Every two weeks I wash and deep condition my hair. Whether it’s at home or at the salon. I don’t miss my bi-weekly appointment. Which products do I use? Gabrielle Union came out with her own hair care-line called ‘Flawless’ and well, the shampoo, conditioner and oil treatment have definitely helped my hair remain flawless.
My main protective hairstyle is rocking a WIG or WIGS (HEHE). When I freshly relax my hair I DON’T braid it up right away. I let my hair breathe for about two weeks after a perm before i get a wash then I put cornrows in. I opt for straight back cornrows, medium sized. Also, I don’t let them start the braiding from my edges because darlings, our edges always have to be in place.
Once or twice a week, I grease my scalp with shea butter preferably Tree of Life Whipped Shea Butter. It’s light on the hair which I love.
Wait, wait, how can I forget? When I take out my braids, I comb out my hair delicately at home BEFORE heading to the salon. Trust, there’s a difference between how you comb your hair compared to a beautician. (WINK)
Lastly, I make sure to roller-set my hair and sit under the dryer after a perm or my bi-weekly appointment. Blow drying is a killer on the hair. It might be faster than being under the hair dryer but the end result isn’t worth it. When I wash my hair at home, I let it air dry before heading to the salon to get cornrows.
For my ladies who don’t wear wigs, you can still follow my hair-care routine. If you relax your hair, don’t over process it. Make sure to not miss your bi-weekly hair appointments. If you’re a fan of the ponytail, don’t pull it too tight. I always say, an edgeless life isn’t a happy one PLUS, where you tend to hold your ponytail begins to break. Once that breakage begins, it will quickly destroy your hair.
You probably thought it would be some crazy, costly routine but it’s quite the opposite. Ladies, it’s so imperative to have healthy, bouncy, luxurious hair whether you rock a wig or not.
If you try my hair-care routine, keep me updated on the progress of your hair.
